The design of this unique, mountain modern 6 bedroom, 7 bath 7,600 SF home on a 5.5 acre lot in the Mountain Star Community of the Vail Valley evolved out of a fun but intense collaborative design process with the owner based on the unique challenges and opportunities of the site. Understanding the client’s goals and budget, we designed a comfortable but sophisticated home deeply rooted in the landscape with powerful indoor outdoor connections.
We utilized high performance floor to ceiling thermally broken triple glazed steel windows and large lift and slide doors to create near transparency and powerful indoor outdoor connections. The kitchen and den space flows out to a large covered outdoor living room with a built in BBQ, outdoor dining table, a seating area focused around a fireplace with lighting and infrared heaters in the ceiling to temper a cool evening and an architectural water feature which creates a soothing sound of water throughout the space. The outdoor room is partially cut into the hillside for shelter from the western winds which creates a hunkered down effect with strong connection to the land in contrast to the large deck of the living room and master bedroom that cantilevers and reaches out to the view while the curved roofs of the home open up to and engage the sky. This creates a very dynamic relationship between the house, the land, the view and the sky- simultaneously physically and emotionally connecting it and its occupants to the land, the distant mountains and the west spirit.
