Hans deeply values and encourages open minded collaboration with his clients, staff and construction partners and strives to make buildings which are timeless, artful and enjoyable. His projects are characterized by innovative, high quality architecture blending local architectural vernacular designs and natural materials with contemporary influences. Hans has designed award-winning sustainable single-family residential, multi-family residential and mixed-use commercial projects throughout the west for over twenty years. Hans’s diverse experience from this wide range of project scales, types and locations provides a holistic approach to architectural design. Prior to founding Berglund Architects in 2004, Hans was an Associate Principal with Cottle Graybeal Yaw Architects (CGY) and served as the director of its Vail office for 7 years. During his 10 years at CGY, Hans designed award winning multi-million dollar custom residential mountain retreats and large mixed-use projects for such prestigious commercial clients as the Aspen Skiing Company, East West Partners, Hines Interests, and Intrawest Development Corporation. Hans led the design, managed the complex approval process and supervised construction of landmark multi owner/user projects in Keystone, Breckenridge, Aspen and the Vail Valley. As president of Berglund Architects, Hans’s work integrates design excellence with sustainable green building practices, precise project management and comprehensive construction documents.
Hans’ intuitive design insight draws in part from his extensive travel experiences and architectural history background. While in college, Hans spent two semesters studying architecture, architectural history and art history in Italy and Spain. His broad art and architectural background is complemented by extensive experience working in the construction industry in both high school and college. Hans has remained extensively involved with the construction industry throughout his professional career by designing and general contracting three residences, several residential remodels and a commercial office space for himself and his family.
Hans received a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University, College of Architecture in 1991. A licensed architect since 1995 and a member of the American Association of Architects (AIA), Hans is also a LEED Home Accredited Professional and has designed eight LEED projects at various levels of completion and certification levels. Hans was a former board member of C.O.R.E (Community Office of Resource Efficiency) in Aspen, a past Chair of Aspen Energy 2000, is currently a member of Rotary International, and is on the board of Walking Mountain Science Center (formerly Gore Range Mountain School).
