PRESIDENT
Hans has designed award-winning and sustainable single-family residential, multi-family and mixed-use commercial projects throughout the US as well as internationally since graduating from Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning in 1991. His portfolio of architectural projects is characterized by innovative architecture blending local architectural vernacular designs and natural materials with contemporary influences. Hans’ diverse experience from his wide range of project scales, types and locations, including extensive master planning, provides an integrated approach to architectural design and its role in the larger environment. Prior to founding Berglund Architects in 2004, Hans served as the director of Cottle Graybeal Yaw Architects’ (now CCY Architects) Vail office for 10 years.
While an architecture student, Hans studied a synthesis of modern and traditional art and architecture at Cornell’s Ithaca, NY campus as well as abroad. Often called “art forms for living”, Hans’ residential designs are heavily influenced by his international travels and experiences in sketching, painting, photography, and sculpture. These experiences created a passion for interpreting regional vernacular architecture with modern influences to create dynamic designs strongly rooted in their environment.
During summer breaks in high school and college, Hans worked in the residential construction industry. Hans’ intuitive design insight draws from this construction background along with one in the visual arts, resulting in artistic, well documented, unique solutions with a high level of detail. He has been the general contractor for three personal residences for his family and as well as for Berglund Architects’ studio spaces. Hans’ passion for sustainable building practices and emerging technologies which developed in these experiences is evident in his architecture.
Hans has been a licensed architect in Colorado since 1995 and in Montana since 2024. He has held an NCARB Certificate (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) since 1998, and has been a LEED Homes Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) since 2010. He is a current member of the American Association of Architects (AIA) and the US Green Building Council. Hans is a past board member of both Walking Mountains Science Center (WMSC) and Vail Valley Foundation (VVF), and currently serves on the WMSC Facilities Committee as well as the VVF Development and Events Committee.
Hans’ early passion for designing in perspective sketching has led him to incorporate extensive three-dimensional computer modeling as a critical design tool in all his firm’s projects. These computer models have become a significant part of the visualization materials for clients and planning approval processes. Hans’ value of shared ideas and passion for sustainable design contributes significantly to the firm’s progressive open minded design environment.
