VALLEY CLUB RESIDENCE

EDWARDS, COLORADO

  • PROJECT DETAILS

Our client’s goal was to design a striking mountain modern home that captured the intimate view to the north and east of the surrounding adjacent open space, engage the creek on the eastern edge of the site, and entirely open up the great room to a generous outdoor living area and the incredible mountain views to the south, while mitigating a neighbor to the west, and interstate highway in valley below to the south.

Our strategy included a sculptural stone wall on the west side of the house stepping down with grade that incorporated the fireplace and a privacy wall for the outdoor room. The wall grounds the house to the site and forms a spatial threshold defining the edge of the auto court. The house’s long low slope shed roof rising to the views and sun to the south, dramatically cantilevers out over the covered outdoor deck and creates a dynamic contrast to the stone wall stepping down with the site grade.

A massive, exposed steel beam supports the roof allowing a stacking door system to open up the entire south wall of the great room to the large, covered deck with outdoor dining and sitting area focused with an outdoor fireplace to provide lots of indoor-outdoor living. During our initial design site visits, we extensively walked the site to carefully plan the location of the great room, outdoor room and large windows and doors to capture the incredible mountain views from the south-east to the south-west. The expansive deck strategically blocks the views and noise of the highway below.

The vast mountain views are also visible from the corner windows in the primary suite, while the bath engages with the intimate view of the creek through the stacking door system opening up the bath and tub to a deck cantilevered over the creek. The private treed open space on the east side of the house is visible in the reflection of the vanity mirrors. The bath is fully immersed in the surrounding private landscape.

A floating wood tread steel stair access the lower levels family room, bar, golf simulator, 3 guest bedrooms and private guest suite apartment. The family room opens out to a patio with a built-in hot tub. With careful planning we created a private sanctuary that takes advantage of the grand views and beautiful site.
